Agus Sudjianto

Executive Vice President, Head of Corporate Model Risk Wells Fargo & Company

Agus Sudjianto is an executive vice president and head of Corporate Model Risk for Wells Fargo, where he is responsible for enterprise model risk management and serving as Chair of the Model Risk Committee.

Prior to his current position, Agus was the modeling and analytics director and chief model risk officer at Lloyds Banking Group in the United Kingdom. Before joining Lloyds, he was a senior credit risk executive and head of Quantitative Risk at Bank of America.

Prior to his career in banking, he was a product design manager in the Powertrain Division of Ford Motor Company.

Agus holds several U.S. patents in both finance and engineering. He has published numerous technical papers and is a co-author of Design and Modeling for Computer Experiments. His technical expertise and interests include quantitative risk, particularly credit risk modeling, machine learning and computational statistics.

He holds masters and doctorate degrees in engineering and management from Wayne State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


Ambika Sukla

Executive Director – AI & Machine Learning, Morgan Stanley

Ambika Sukla leads Morgan Stanley’s AI Center of Excellence, where his team is focused on researching latest developments in AI and applying selective techniques to different areas of finance. His area of expertise ranges from core statistical/probabilistic models to newer deep learning algorithms. The team works on business problems in sales & trading, research, investment management, risk and other divisions. His research focus is on combining newer deep learning models with traditional econometrics, and devising novel  unsupervised and semi-supervised models to extract meaning from vast amounts of unlabeled text. Ambika’s background is in signal processing and information theory and he holds a Masters degree in Telecommunication Engineering from NJIT.


Andy Price

Finance FlashBlade Sales Leader, Pure Storage

Andy is responsible for Pure Storage’s FlashBlade Financial Services Strategy. FlashBlade is Pure Storage’s next generation storage solution built from the ground up to meet the unique requirements of scale out, “clustered by design”, “sharded by design”, massively parallel, real-time applications. Through Pure’s partnership with Nvidia it has been involved in some of the largest global AI deployments across a wide range of use cases and vertical markets. Much of this knowledge and IP was brought together in AIRI: the worlds first solution for AI at scale that was announced at Nvidia GTC in March 2018. Marrying Pure’s FlashBlade technology with Nvidia’s DGX-1 and Arista or Cisco networking, AIRI delivers a proven, pre-validated “turn key” AI solution for Enterprises.

In the current role Andy divides his time between meeting with customers, educating and enabling the field, providing feedback to engineering and continually refining Pure’s go to market for the financial services market. 

Before Pure Andy worked for a number of leading technology companies including AppDynamics, VCE, BMC and Ascential covering a wide range of technology areas including APM, Converged Infrastructure, Automation and Orchestration, ITSM, Data Integration, Data Warehousing & Business Analytics.

Unlike all the other speakers at the event Andy has a BA in English and Creative Studies from the University of Portsmouth.


Bayu Febriajie

Vice President, Innovation & Data Analytics, DBS Bank

Bayu is a thought leader in digital innovation space. He is currently with DBS Bank Singapore (World’s Best Digital Bank 2018 by Euromoney), leading the journey to delivering top-notch Digital Corporate Customer Service experience.

He led the initiative to launch the 1st Corporate Banking Chatbot in Asia & Livechat (agent chat) platform in 6 DBS core markets resulting in 3x increase in total digital engagement & CSAT score averaging above 4.8/5.0.

He also acted as business coach in numerous customer journey discoveries employing Human-Centered Design methodology which resulted in 8% cost savings & better customer experience.

Bayu holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Nanyang Technological University Singapore.


Charles Elkan

Managing Director & Global Head of Machine Learning, Goldman Sachs

Charles Elkan is a managing director and the global head of machine learning at Goldman Sachs, where his mission is to drive opportunities to apply ML and AI across the firm. From 2014 to 2018, he led Amazon’s Seattle-based central machine learning team, with over 30 researchers, engineers, and managers. The team did R&D in forecasting, bandit algorithms, video and shopping recommendations, anomaly detection in streaming data, conversational AI, and deep learning for understanding consumers and products. Earlier, Dr. Elkan was a tenured professor of computer science at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where his research won several best paper awards and data science contests. The impact of some of his early work was the subject of a book on the history and philosophy of science, “Weaving self-evidence: A sociology of logic” by Claude Rosental, Princeton University Press. On various leaves from UCSD, Dr. Elkan was a visiting professor at Harvard University and elsewhere. His Ph.D. advisees are now themselves faculty at institutions including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Washington, Columbia University, and more. Other advisees are leaders in industry, including the vice president at Google responsible for the world’s largest app store.


Chiranjib Gupta

Head of Decision and Data Science of Consumer Loans, Marcus by Goldman Sachs

He has more than 18 years of experience in Consumer Finance, leading efforts to develop predictive models and optimization routines. Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, he led teams in Risk Appetite, Decision Science, Credit Risk management, Loss forecasting and Marketing analytics at JP Morgan Chase, Discover, American Express and others. He has a Ph.D in Economics from Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai, India.


Erez Katz

CEO & Co-Founder, Lucena Research

Erez is the CEO and Co-Founder of Lucena Research and was instrumental in architecting and designing Lucena’s flagship platform QuantDesk®. 

Prior to co-founding Lucena, Erez was the founder of Objectware Inc, an enterprise cloud software company, which was sold in 2007 to Bridgeline Digital. Erez assumed Bridgeline’s Chief Operating Officer through 2011 and was instrumental in its growth and ultimately IPO on the Nasdaq stock exchange. 

Today, Erez utilizes his expertise in machine learning technology to help investment professionals generate Alpha, minimize risk in their portfolios and generate new investment ideas using predictive analytics and machine learning technology. With Erez’s leadership, Lucena’s mission is to bring awareness to the power of machine learning and connect alternative data providers and investment professionals seeking to harness the power of advanced predictive analytics.

Erez received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Baruch College in NYC in 1993.


Eric La Scola

Product Marketing Manager, Dragon

Eric La Scola is the Product Marketing Manager for Dragon Professional and Consumer solutions at Nuance.  In this role, he drives the marketing strategy and develops the product positioning and messaging that distinguish Dragon voice recognition solutions in document intensive sectors such as the law enforcement, legal, finance and enterprise markets.   Prior to joining Nuance, Eric held key B2B technology sales and marketing positions bringing computing solutions to market that solved business problems, improved organizational processes, and mitigated risk for enterprise, creative and technical, and educational technology users.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Boston College.  


Li Deng

Chief AI Officer, Citadel

Li Deng joined Citadel, one of the most successful investment firms in the world, as its chief AI officer in May 2017. Previously, he was chief scientist of AI and partner research manager at Microsoft; he has also been a professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario and held teaching/research positions at MIT (Cambridge), ATR (Kyoto, Japan), and HKUST (Hong Kong). He is a fellow of the IEEE, the Acoustical Society of America, and the ISCA. He has also been an affiliate professor at University of Washington since 2000. In recognition of the pioneering work on disrupting speech recognition industry using large-scale deep learning, he received the 2015 IEEE SPS Technical Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions to Automatic Speech Recognition and Deep Learning. He also received numerous best paper and patent awards for contributions to artificial intelligence, machine learning, information retrieval, multimedia signal processing, speech processing, and human language technology. Deng is an author or coauthor of six technical books on deep learning, speech processing, discriminative machine learning, and natural-language processing.


Lisa Huang

Director of Quantitative Investing, Betterment

Lisa Huang, Ph.D., is the Director of Quantitative Investing at Betterment. In her role at Betterment, she heads a team responsible for portfolio optimization, investment fund selection, risk modeling and trading strategies design.  She holds a degree in mathematics and biochemistry from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Harvard University. Prior to Betterment, Dr. Huang was a quantitative strategist at Goldman Sachs, leading research collaborations and building models for fixed income strategies.


Manuela Veloso

Head of AI Research, JPMorgan Chase

Manuela M. Veloso recently joined JPMorgan Chase to create and head an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Center. Veloso is on leave from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) where she is Herbert A. Simon University Professor in the School of Computer Science, and where she was the Head of the Machine Learning Department until June 2018. She researches in AI, Robotics, and Machine Learning. At CMU, she founded and directs the CORAL research laboratory, for the study of autonomous agents that Collaborate, Observe, Reason, Act, and Learn, www.cs.cmu.edu/~coral. Veloso is AAAI Fellow, ACM Fellow, AAAS Fellow, and IEEE Fellow, Einstein Chair Professor of the Chinese National Academy of Science, the co-founder and past President of RoboCup, and past President of AAAI. Manuela Veloso

Martin Caupin

Head of Analytics Lab, CIB Americas – Innovation, BNP Paribas

Martin Caupin joined BNP Paribas 8 years ago; he now leads the Analytics Lab within CIBAmericas Innovation.

Within his role, he wishes to provide insights from the data and enhance business processes. His team leverages on a data science expertise for discovery and strong IT skills to facilitate delivery.

Previously, as a Portfolio Manager in CIB Americas, New-York, Martin worked on several projects including synthetic loans securitization. He worked as a credit Quant, in Brussels and Paris, providing the data and analysis to facilitate decisions on BNP Portfolios.

Martin holds a MSc in aerospace engineering with a major in financial engineering from ISAE – SUPAERO (Toulouse, France).


Matt Greenwood

Chief Innovation Officer, Two Sigma Investments

Matt is the Chief Innovation Officer at Two Sigma Investments. Since joining Two Sigma in 2003, he has led company-wide efforts across both engineering and modeling teams. Matt oversees development of BeakerX, which extends Jupyter Notebook to support to six languages, additional widgets, and one-click publication. Matt is also a board member and Venture Partner at Two Sigma Ventures and works closely with portfolio companies in both board membership and advisory capacities.

Matt began his career at Bell Labs and later moved to IBM Research, where he was responsible for early efforts in tablet computing and distributed computing. In 2000, Matt was lead developer and manager for Entrisphere, Inc., where he helped create a product providing access equipment for broadband service providers. Matt earned a BA and MA in Math from Oxford University, and an MA in Theoretical Physics from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. He also holds a PhD in Mathematics from Columbia University, where he taught for many years.


Mike Schuster

Managing Director, Two Sigma

Mike Schuster came to Two Sigma as the managing director of the AI core team from the Google Brain group, where he served as a senior staff research scientist. At Google he worked on the human-like speech synthesis system ‘Tacotron 2’, led the development of the new Google Neural Machine Translation system, and earlier worked on all aspects of speech recognition on Android and many other machine learning related projects. He was also an early contributor to Google’s open-source machine learning toolkit TensorFlow. Mike’s 25+ year professional career in machine learning and neural networks brought him to Advanced Telecommunications Research Laboratories in Kyoto, Japan, Nuance in the U.S., and NTT in Japan where he worked on general machine learning and speech recognition research and development. Mike holds a Ph.D. in Information Science from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Japan and a Master’s in Electric Engineering from the Gerhard-Mercator University, Germany.


Nicolas Chapados

Co-Founder & CSO, Element AI

Nicolas Chapados holds an engineering degree from McGill University and a PhD in Computer Science from University of Montreal, Canada. While still writing his thesis and jointly with his advisor Yoshua Bengio, he co-founded ApSTAT Technologies in 2001, a machine learning technology transfer firm, to apply cutting-edge academic research ideas to areas such as insurance risk evaluation, supply chain planning, business forecasting, national defence, and hedge fund management. From this work, he also co-founded spin-off companies: Imagia, to detect and quantify cancer early with AI analysis of medical images, Element AI, to help organizations plan and implement their AI transformation, and Chapados Couture Capital, a quantitative asset manager. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.


Norman Niemer

Chief Data Scientist, UBS Asset Management

Norman Niemer is the Chief Data Scientist within UBS Asset Management’s Quant & Data Science (QED) team. He is also responsible for both the business as well as technical aspects of multiple innovation projects that augment human decision makers with machine intelligence. Prior to UBS Asset Management, Norman led the data science efforts at UBS O’Connor, worked as an investment analyst at Caxton Associates and Morgan Stanley and even founded a tech company in high school. Outside of investment management, he has led teams that built data- and AI-based products that won several high profile hackathons including Techcrunch NY, Fintech NY and Mastercard Masters of Code NY. He holds a MS Financial Engineering from Columbia University and a BS in Banking and Finance from Cass Business School (London).


Prashanth Challa

Prashanth Challa, Executive Director – Cybersecurity, Morgan Stanley

Prashanth Challa is an Executive Director in Wealth Management and Investment Management Technology Cybersecurity and is responsible for the integrity and confidentiality of firm and client data. His duties comprise tackling complex security issues including the secure software development lifecycle, network analysis and design, managing external partner relationships, mobile and web security, and analytic development for the detection of Advanced Persistent Threats. Prashanth also leads the effort to ensure the cybersecurity of Investment Management Technology.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Prashanth was Head of Cybersecurity at a startup focused on bringing big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to bear on cybersecurity problems. There he created analytics for threat detection and advised clients on how to best deal with their cybersecurity issues. Prashanth began his cybersecurity career at the National Security Agency, where he conducted and led a team performing computer network operations, developed exploits and implants, and researched vulnerabilities through reverse engineering. While specializing in the exploitation of cryptographic devices, he delivered new and unique tools to enable foreign intelligence collection from the highest value targets.


Ralph Lafferty

Head of Financial Services & Trading, Orbital Insight

Ralph comes to Orbital Insight with 18 years of experience working in institutional investment management and trading. Ralph runs Financial Services and Trading for Orbital Insight assisting it’s customers in leveraging Geospatial Analytics for alpha creation and risk mitigation. His background includes execution, systems and operations consulting for asset managers, alternative investment vehicles and private equity firms. He has also held leadership roles in risk management and systems development as well as research, equities and derivatives trading.

Most recently, Ralph held a director position at Eze Software Group and was responsible for the expansion of the customer base across Central and Western North America from 2007 through the subsequent sale of the organization to TPG Capital in 2013.


Scott Bauguess

SEC Deputy Chief Economist & Deputy Director, Division of Economic Risk & Analysis

Dr. Bauguess is the SEC’s Deputy Chief Economist and Deputy Director of the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA).

Dr. Bauguess oversees the Division’s risk assessment and data-driven, predictive analytics development, designed to detect fraud and misconduct in the Commission’s investigation and examination programs, specifically in the areas of corporate issuers, broker- dealers, and asset managers. He directs the Commission’s economic analyses in recommendations to the Commission to enact federal rules related to corporate disclosure and governance, accounting standards, structured finance, and OTC derivatives. His service also includes the business management of the SEC’s Tips, Complaints, and Referral (TCR) system, which was launched in 2010 to accelerate the detection of market misconduct.

Dr. Bauguess joined the SEC in 2007 from Texas Tech University where he was on faculty in the College of Business, and taught graduate courses in corporate financial policy at George Washington University. Dr. Bauguess received his Ph.D. in Finance from Arizona State University in 2004. He also holds a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and prior to his doctoral studies spent six years working as an engineer in the high tech industry.


Scott Clark

Co-Founder & CEO, SigOpt

Scott is co-founder and CEO of SigOpt, a YC and a16z backed “Optimization as a Service” startup in San Francisco. Scott has been applying optimal learning techniques in industry and academia for years. Scott holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics and an MS in Computer Science from Cornell University and BS degrees in Mathematics, Physics, and Computational Physics from Oregon State University. Scott was chosen as one of Forbes’ 30 under 30 in 2016.


Shu-Wie Chen

Managing Director, Barclays

Shu-Wie Chen is a Managing Director in Quantitative Analytics at Barclays where he oversees modeling for Retail and Wholesale Credit Risk, Financial Modeling and Fraud Detection.  Previously, he supported mortgage analytics for US Fixed Income Proprietary Trading at Salomon Brothers, fixed income derivative analytics for US Fixed Income Derivatives Trading at Citigroup, structured credit trading analytics for credit derivatives trading at Lehman Brothers and credit analytics for flow credit trading at Barclays.  Shu-Wie holds an S.B. in computer science and engineering from MIT and a Ph.D. in computer science from Columbia University.



SriSatish Ambati

CEO & Co-Founder, H2O.ai

SriSatish Ambati is the CEO and Co-Founder of H2O.ai – makers of H2O, the leading open source machine learning platform and Driverless AI, which speeds up data science workflows by automating feature engineering, model tuning, ensembling and model deployment.

Sri is known for envisioning killer apps in fast evolving spaces and assembling stellar teams towards productizing that vision. A regular speaker in the Big Data, NoSQL and Java circuit, Sri leaves a trail @srisatish.


Todd Morrill

Data Scientist – AI Accelerator, PwC

Todd Morrill is a data scientist working in an AI lab experimenting with emerging techniques (e.g. machine reading comprehension, speech-to-text modeling, object detection in images, etc.) to deliver projects/products for our external clients and internal teams at PwC. Most days are spent coding in Python (e.g. Tensorflow, PySpark, etc.) and deploying models to be hosted on a public cloud (e.g. GCP, AWS, etc.) as well as guiding junior data scientists on their work.


With increasing data can come increasing confusion. Our goal at Ai4 is to bridge the knowledge gap by providing professionals and practitioners with the resources they need to make key business-shaping decisions in a rapidly changing world. Our organization began hosting technology focused events in 2016 with the launch of the bi-coastal event series Worlds Fair Nano. Through Worlds Fair Nano, and other technology focused events, we have connected 20,000 individuals to the future and counting.
